Così fan tutte

June 30 at Virginia Tech, July 10m, 13, 15 at The Paramount Theater | 2016

The 2016 summer season kicks off with Così fan tutteone of Mozart's most beloved operas. The hilarious and heartfelt story begins with a game of love and seduction when two young men decide to test their fiancées’ fidelity, only for both couples to discover the fickleness of attraction. For the first time, Ash Lawn Opera will take its mainstage opera on the road, with a fully-staged performance of Così fan tutte at the beautiful Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre at the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech on June 30, followed by a return to The Paramount Theater for performances on July 10, 13, and 15. This comedic classic, full of mistaken identities, deceptive servants, jealous lovers, and sublime music, is a production you won’t want to miss.

The cast features Mireille Asselin (Metropolitan Opera, Wolf Trap Opera), recently recognized by the New York Classical Review for “one of the most enchanting performances of 2015” following her appearance as Adele in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Die Fledermaus, as the clever maid Despina, as well as Kristopher Irmiter (San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera) as the hilarious and conniving Don Alfonso. Cassandra Velasco (Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago), Melinda Whittington (Wolf Trap Opera, Opera Carolina), Joshua Dennis (Santa Fe Opera, Arizona Opera), and Andrew Garland (Seattle Opera, Opera Philadelphia) complete the cast as the four scheming lovers. Andrea Dorf McGray (Washington National Opera, Aspen Music Festival) directs, updating Mozart’s masterpiece to the twentieth century, and Maestro Steven Jarvi, Resident Conductor of St. Louis Symphony, returns to Ash Lawn Opera for the sixth consecutive year to conduct a vibrant orchestra with players from prestigious symphonies around the country.

In addition to its fully-staged performances at The Paramount, Ash Lawn Opera will present an abridged performance of Così fan tutte with piano starring its talented roster of Young Artists on June 25 at Garth Newel Music Center, the beautiful theater nestled in bucolic Hot Springs, Virginia.
