Housing Hosts

About our Housing Hosts

We are very fortunate to have a professional opera company in the Charlottesville community, and its success is dependent on support from our volunteer Board, Guild, and—critically—Housing Hosts, who welcome our artists and production staff into their homes each year. Our Housing Hosts provide a uniquely warm and inviting experience for visiting artists, many of whom have built life-long relationships with their host families. Our artists come from the most prestigious houses in the country, giving hosts an inside look at the next generation of opera professionals.

We hope that you will consider becoming a Housing Host. Our artists require a bedroom, bath, and kitchen privileges; we don't ask our hosts to provide food or transportation. These accomplished young people make excellent house guests and are happy to housesit while you are away on vacation. Who knows -- you may wind up playing host to the next great opera sensation!

All hosts receive two complimentary tickets to a performance, as well as invitations to exclusive events throughout the season. If you are interested in becoming a Housing Host, please contact Jackie Newton at housing@ashlawnopera.org or (434) 293-4500. Read on for more details about becoming a host this summer!

Summer 2016 Housing Host Information

This year’s summer season (our 39th) features nearly 100 artists from across the country coming to Charlottesville to take part in Ash Lawn Opera’s productions of Cosi fan tutte and South Pacific.  Our artists come from such prestigious houses as the Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Glimmerglass Festival.

Artists are in Charlottesville for varying lengths of time.  The housing schedule this year is as follows:

Young Artists June 13 – July 30
Production Staff June 13 - July 31 (dates approximate)
Apprentice Singers June 26 – July 30
Principal Artists in Cosi fan tutte June 16 – July 19
Principal Artists in South Pacific: June 27 - July 31
Orchestra Musicians July 4 - July 30

All hosts will receive two complimentary tickets to the opening of either Cosi fan tutte on July 10 or South Pacific on July 23.  Because our Young Artists, Production Staff, and Apprentice Singers arrive earlier than the others, if you agree to host a member of one of these groups you will receive two tickets to the opening of each production for a total of four tickets.  For those who are unable to attend an opening performance, we can arrange tickets to another performance, space permitting.

If you are interested in becoming a housing host, please complete the housing information form (available for download here) and return it to our office at your earliest convenience by email to housing@ashlawnopera.org or USPS.  We plan to make assignments in April.  Please contact Jackie Newton at 434-293-4500 extension 103 or Housing@ashlawnopera.org with questions.  Thank you for your support for Charlottesville’s opera company, Ash Lawn Opera!

Wonderful group of people and terrific productions.
My daughters have definitely benefitted by knowing our guests – they maintain their friendships! It is a wonderful opportunity all around.
It was an excellent experience and we truly enjoyed.
We always look forward to our musician visitors every summer.  We enjoy hearing about their studies and experiences, and it is lovely to have the house full of music. Our teenager's interest in opera was stoked by conversation with these excellent young musicians, leading to her performance with Ash Lawn Opera in the chorus of Amahl & the Night Visitors at Christmas last winter.  And, of course, we have the pleasure of knowing that we are making it possible for Charlottesville to enjoy our own first-rate opera. The musicians have always been very respectful of our home and our schedule -- and have on occasion been kind enough to cat-sit while we were away!
