Ash Lawn Opera provides Apprentice Singers with a rewarding way to begin their professional careers while still pursuing their undergraduate or graduate degrees. Apprentice Singers have performance opportunities not only in the ensembles of main stage productions at the historic Paramount Theater in downtown Charlottesville, but also in outreach performances and recitals throughout the Charlottesville area. Apprentice Singers are invited to audit all Young Artist master classes and certain singers may be selected to participate in master classes and auditions with agents, administrators, and conductors.
Recent Apprentice Singer outreach performances have taken place at: the Haven, Louisa Arts Center, Orange Music Society, the Charlottesville Rotary Club, RoseWood Village, the University of Virginia's College at Wise, Wintergreen Summer Music Festival.

Training and Performance Opportunities

Apprentice Singers have the opportunity to perform supporting and bit parts and in the ensemble of the summer musical and, depending on availability, cover main stage roles and take part in outreach performances. Please see below for specific opportunities for male and female singers.

For Men:
Male Apprentice Singers will sing in the ensembles of both productions. In Rigoletto, they will cover Borsa, Count Ceprano, Marullo, Count Monterone, and Herald. In Oklahoma, they will cover Will Parker, Ali Hakim, and Andrew Carnes and perform bit parts. They will be resident in Charlottesville from June 26 to August 5.

For Women:
In Rigoletto, female Apprentice Singers will cover Countess Ceprano, Page, Giovanna.  In Oklahoma, they will sing in the ensemble and will cover Ado Annie,  Gertie Cummings, and Aunt Eller, as well as perform bit parts. They will be resident in Charlottesville from July 5 to August 5.

All Apprentice Singers also receive private coaching sessions and perform in donor and marketing events, in addition to auditing and, if selected, performing in master classes and auditions with visiting artists and administrators. Audition Repertoire

  • Aria of choice
  • Excerpt from musical theater. Selections from Oklahoma are strongly preferred (a score is available here, with password "curly"), but excerpts by or in the style of Rodgers & Hammerstein will be accepted. Please, no belting.
  • Additional aria or musical theater excerpt (see above)


Compensation is based on the amount of time spent in Charlottesville.
Female Apprentice Singers are offered a stipend of $750 and will be resident in Charlottesville from July 5 to August 5. Male Apprentice Singers are offered a stipend of $1000 and will be resident in Charlottesville from June 26 to August 5.
Additionally, host housing (private room/bath in a donor's home) will be provided. Transportation to, from, and within Charlottesville is the responsibility of the artist.
