Ash
Lawn Opera Announces 2008 Season
Ash
Lawn Opera is proud to announce its 2008 season
featuring the timeless tales of Carmen ,
by George Bizet, and My Fair Lady ,
by Alan Lerner and Frederick Loewe.
The
season opens with My Fair Lady , the charming story
of Eliza Doolittle and her transformation into an English
lady by professor Henry Higgins. Eliza becomes not only a
lady but also the object of her professor's affection. Amid
lovely songs and hysterical moments, our audience will surely
find themselves enchanted with Eliza as well. We are excited
to welcome back Katherine Altobello after
her lovely 2007 performance as Leisl in the Festival's The
Sound of Music . Altobello will play Eliza Doolittle,
while baritone Peter Clark , whom audiences
will remember from the Festival's 2005 production of
Annie Get Your Gun , will perform the role of Henry Higgins.
Brent Turner will play Colonel Pickering
and Matthew Edwards , Alfred Doolittle.
Carmen
, a French opera set in Spain , is the story of a beautiful
gypsy with a fiery temper. Carmen's incomparable and sensual
allure entices the upright Don Jose into her world of reckless
passion, and the result is a tale of intrigue, adventure,
love, jealousy, and, ultimately, tragedy. This timeless opera
classic never fails to mesmerize its audience. Melina
Pineda returns to Ash Lawn Opera to sing Carmen,
and newcomer Christian Reinert will sing
Don Jose. Melina played Anita in our 2006 production of West
Side Story . Baritone Timothy Kuhn
joins the Festival to sing Escamillo, Don Jose's rival for
Carmen's attention, and Rochelle Bard will
sing Micaela, Don Jose's sweet yet forgotten fiancé.
My
Fair Lady will be performed on July 5, 6, 12, 13, 22,
24, 26, 27, 29, 31, August 2, 6, 8, and 9. Carmen
will be performed on July 19, 20 , 23, 25, 30 and August 1,
3, 5, 7, and 10 . All performances are sung in English
in the Boxwood Gardens of James Monroe's estate, Ash Lawn-Highland.
Doors open for picnicking at 6:00 p.m. and shows begin at
8:00 p.m. For more information, visit our website at www.ashlawnopera.org
